The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has approved the elevation of 68 legal practitioners to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) following its 174th Plenary Session held on 23 July 2026. The successful candidates include 67 advocates and one academic, with the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for 12 October 2026.

LPPC Elevates 68 Legal Practitioners to the Rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria
The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has approved the elevation of 68 legal practitioners to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
The approval was announced in a press release dated 23 July 2026, following the Committee’s 174th Plenary Session, chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the LPPC, Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, GCON.
According to the Committee, 67 advocates were approved under the advocates’ category, while Professor Nnamdi Onyeka Obiaraeri emerged as the sole successful candidate under the academic category.
The LPPC noted that the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) is conferred on legal practitioners who have demonstrated exceptional professional excellence, either through outstanding advocacy before the courts or significant contributions to legal scholarship and academia.
The Committee further stated that all successful candidates are required to participate in and successfully complete the Pre-Swearing-In Induction Programme, which is a mandatory requirement before the formal conferment of the SAN rank.
In addition, the LPPC reminded all successful applicants that, in line with Paragraph 25(1) of the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Guidelines and Rule 39(3) of the Rules of Professional Conduct, 2023, they must refrain from publishing or encouraging congratulatory advertisements, goodwill messages, or public notices relating to their nomination or conferment. Any breach of these provisions may attract disciplinary or ethical sanctions.
The Swearing-In Ceremony for the newly appointed Senior Advocates of Nigeria has been scheduled to hold on Monday, 12 October 2026.
The Committee’s press release also contained the full list of the successful candidates, including advocates admitted based on seniority at the Bar and the successful academic applicant.
The elevation to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria remains one of the highest honours in the Nigerian legal profession, recognizing exceptional advocacy, integrity, and contributions to the administration and development of justice.
