Opinion. Citizen project-monitoring committees can improve public accountability, but only when they can compare promises with evidence.
NAN reported that the Niger Delta Youth Network created a monitoring and accountability committee and urged contractors to return to abandoned road projects. The demand is understandable, yet public pressure becomes more effective when budgets, contracts, milestones, variations, responsible agencies, and completion dates are available for scrutiny.
Government agencies should publish those details in accessible formats and provide an escalation route when work stops. Civil-society monitors should document conditions carefully and distinguish verified observations from allegations. Accountability works best when facts are public, deadlines are measurable, and responses are traceable.
