Adaku Mbama, a lawyer and former chairperson of FIDA’s Badagry Branch, has urged stronger public education on consent and faster justice in sexual-offence cases.
In an interview with NAN, Mbama said consent must be voluntary, informed, continuous, and capable of being withdrawn. She stressed that marriage, dating, previous intimacy, silence, or lack of physical resistance should not be treated as automatic consent.
She called for specialised courts, victim-centred policing, witness protection, one-stop support services, and sustained public awareness. The report also highlights barriers including stigma, under-reporting, financial constraints, and slow prosecution.
