Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has said the country’s Fayda national digital-identification system could increase gross domestic product by 7 per cent.
NAN, citing TV BRICS, reported that Fayda combines biometric and demographic data and assigns a unique identification number to registered citizens. Nearly 50 million people had reportedly been registered, with the system integrated into more than 150 public and private institutions.
The report presents digital identity as an economic and administrative tool, while also raising the need for clear privacy safeguards, transparent governance, and reliable mechanisms for correcting inaccurate personal data.
