The National Human Rights Commission and the Nigeria Police Force have launched a Joint Liaison Framework intended to strengthen human-rights protection in policing and criminal-justice practice.
At the 6 August 2026 launch, the Attorney-General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, said rights must move from the text of legal instruments into everyday encounters between citizens and law-enforcement officers.
The framework provides for joint detention visits, faster handling of complaints, regular human-rights training, information sharing, and coordinated action by the two institutions. The NHRC said the arrangement is designed to replace ad-hoc interventions with a structured system of collaboration.
Its practical test will be implementation: whether complaints are handled promptly, detention conditions improve, and officers and citizens can rely on clear accountability mechanisms.
